The Canterbury House is located in the picturesque Village of Woodstock, Vermont. Inspired by the impressive concentration
and continuity of late 18th and 19th century architecture, National Geographic Magazine called the village one
of the most beautiful in America.
The home we invite you into is an 1880 Victorian townhouse that has been completely restored to offer modern comfort
combined with historic authenticity. Standards for historic preservation have been followed in renovating The Canterbury
House for use as a tourist home. The house is furnished with Period antiques, but is not a museum set piece. It
is our intention that it reflect fine craftsmanship and beautiful surroundings combined with the warmth and hospitality
reminiscent of a family homecoming.
In Woodstock, leave your car parked and your watch in the room. Exiting by the front door of The Canterbury House
and looking to the left, you can see the face of the clock on the Masonic Temple, and around the village you can
hear the Revere Bells ring out the
hour, but time is important only in how you choose to spend it. Within a block or so you are among some of the
finest shops, restaurants, art galleries, antique stores and museums in New England. All are gracefully enclosed
in buildings as varied and interesting as the activities inside.
A visit to the Town Crier will inform you as to "what's doing" in the village. The central Green is the
site of winter Yule festivals and summer social events, as well as relaxed park bench conversations between villagers.
Forgetting your aerobic program you could browse in the lovely serenity of the Norman Williams Public Library,
view a current film at the town theater, record your visit with a picture taken in front of the covered Middle
Bridge or simply sit on a bank of one of the town's two rivers and watch the water slide by. Enjoying summer stock
and the Green Mountain Players has long been a popular way to spend a summer night. A sleigh ride followed by the
warming of toes in front of a fire is considered a respectable way to spend a Vermont winter evening.
A leisurely drive in the surrounding area reveals the renowned quiet beauty of Vermont. The local Billings Farm
Museum and the nearby Coolidge Homestead offer an opportunity to learn about the old-fashioned methods for making
the farm products Vermont is famous for. And for those who like to hike, the Appalachian and Long Trails are easily
accessible.
Active pastimes abound in the Woodstock area both summer and winter. For the warm weather enthusiast there is the
Woodstock Country Club with it's Robert Trent Jones designed golf course open for public play. For those who enjoy
chasing tennis balls, various court surfaces are available. Game fish abound in Vermont's lakes and streams. A
resurgence of the Atlantic Salmon is underway in the nearby Connecticut River, and rainbow trout populate virtually
all local waters. For those who prefer the winter, not only do we have cross country skiing, but also some great
downhill slopes including, Suicide Six, Killington, Pico, Mt. Ascutney, Okemo and Mountain Meadows just to name
a few -- offering the best Alpine and Nordic skiing in the eastern United States.
In sum, we offer you a beautifully decorated room and home, breakfast at our common table, and hospitality usually
extended only to "kith and kin" along with the many pleasures of Woodstock. We welcome you to share with us The Canterbury House and the special state of mind and place
